Niqolet Lewis is an emerging artist based in Sydney, currently undertaking a Masters of Fine Art at the National Art School. Her works are an investigation into the relationship between portraiture and masks, By using popular themes such as sexuality, violence, and body image she touches various overlapping themes. Several reoccurring subject matter can be recognised, such as the relation with popular culture and media, working with repetition, provocation and the investigation of the process of expectations. Her works are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. By obscuring the face, the distortions in her work incite the viewer to make new personal associations and challenges the binaries we continually reconstruct between Self and Other. With influences as diverse as Jenny Saville and Laura Lancaster, new synergies are generated from both orderly and random discourse.
